Shopping and Style: Diamonds are everyone's best friend at D.J. Bitzan Jewelers


For all things that gleam and glitter, look no further than your local jeweler. In the 2017 Best of Central Minnesota contest, Times readers voted D.J. Bitzan Jewelers the Best Jewelry Store in the area. Owner and Vice President Erin Bitzan answered our questions about being in the business of baubles.

Why is it important that D.J. Bitzan continue to serve Central Minnesota consumers?

Our entire story — past and present — has been rooted around the Central Minnesota community. We were born here, attended school here and have served customers here since 1966. We wouldn’t have been able to grow to what we are without our customers and a community that supports local business.

We don’t take it lightly that our customers share their most personal life stories with us: We share in repairing a sentimental mother’s ring, we are the first to know that he’s going to “pop the question” with an engagement ring, and we help to celebrate a promotion with a watch they’ve always coveted. We make our customer’s dreams come alive with a symbol they can cherish every day. That’s a powerful job! We see meaning in your visits and know that by exceeding expectations, those important, special moments in your life can be preserved.

If you could give one piece of advice to men selecting an engagement ring, what would it be?

My advice to couples shopping for an engagement ring is to enjoy the experience — this is supposed to be fun! Engagement ring shopping is more than a transaction: Starting a great, professional relationship with your jeweler is important because you’ll be returning in the future for care and upkeep. Make sure you’re confident that you’ll be taken care of for life.

When choosing a diamond, choose one the way we do: Don’t rely on the diamond grading alone. Inspect several in person to figure out what exactly you’re personally drawn to in diamond quality. When we buy our diamonds, we look through thousands at a time to choose the best ones for our customers based on the combination of quality and value. When you get the chance to compare multiple diamonds side-by-side, it’s easier than you think to see what makes one diamond more special and you’ll appreciate the end result even more.

What do you want Times readers to know about your business that they might not already know?

People often ask us when “engagement season” is, and honestly, people get engaged year-round. Our busiest time of year is, of course, during the holiday season. We all work long hours and when combined with personal family festivities, it can be draining. We recharge with a large volume of cookies and treats, but our favorite part of the holiday season is watching the movie is “Elf.” Each of us could probably recite it word for word! We checked our Apple TV and saw that last season we played “Elf” 68 times in our store!
